Cooking Class for Valentine's Day

One of the reasons we moved from the 'burbs into "town" was so we'd be close to lots of things to do.
Not that there's nothing to do outside the perimeter (OTP they call it here in Atlanta) but we wanted to do different stuff.
So here we are. Doing different stuff.

Last night we participated in a cooking class at Cooks Warehouse at Ansley Mall and had SOOO much fun--much more fun than going to a restaurant.

I feel like I'm writing a commercial--maybe I am, but no one at Cooks knows it.

Anyway, this class was lead by a real chef with several assistants. Rosemary, the chef--I'm not making that up-what a great name for a chef--was knowledgeable and down to earth. Her explanation of the recipes and techniques was so easy to follow and entertaining she actually had me believing I could make all this stuff.

Since it was Valentine's Day and we were at the Dinner for Sweethearts class we worked in couples. Each course on the menu was prepared by two couples along with an assistant and Rosemary keeping an eye on everybody.

The menu:

Creamy Roasted Wild Mushroom Soup with Sage Croutons
Crab-Stuffed Shrimp with Champagne Beurre Blanc Sauce
Ginger & Sweet Potato Gratin
Sauteed Haricot Verte with Caramelized Shallots
Mini Baked Alaska

Is your mouth watering, yet? It should be.

Steve and I worked on the Creamy Roasted Wild Mushroom Soup. We don't know diddly about wild mushrooms so thought we might actually learn something--we did.

Thankfully nobody judged us and our sad lack of "knife skills" when we somehow turned an onion into a pile of choppings. I do not claim to have "chopped" the onion--it takes skill and know how to do that. I made a whole onion into little pieces.
We combined several types of mushrooms with olive oil and a little salt and roasted them on large cookie sheets. They smelled heavenly--I highly recommend roasting wild mushrooms the next time you want to impress somebody--it's easy and looks really classy.
The roasted mushrooms were cooked with vegetable stock, shallots, thyme, Madeira and cream--really there were 15 ingredients including 3 kinds of mushrooms. The soup came out just fine. It tasted great and nobody choked or keeled over.

The Crab-Stuffed Shrimp with Champagne Beurre Blanc Sauce was a thing of beauty.
I could have eaten the whole pan of Ginger and Sweet Potato Gratin all by my little 'ol self it was that good.
Some people didn't show up so the Haricot Vertes were on their own--actually I think Rosemary did them on the sly. They were delish! Caramelized Shallots are almost burnt when they're done--learned that, too. They were just wonderful.

Now the Mini Baked Alaska; this was the most complicated, difficult, wrought with peril dish on the menu.
I think something went wrong and they had to start over on part of this one. All this was happening as I was turning a whole onion into little pieces with a very large sharp knife so I'm not entirely sure what was going on over there.
In the end they came up with a lovely Italian Meringue which is different from regular old meringue. It involves cooking Karo Syrup and a candy thermometer. I'm not so good with candy thermometers as evidenced by the batch of divinity we threw out at Christmas so I'll probably pass on making this at home.

Anyway, after we were allowed to pipe (with a star tip and piping bag) the meringue on our cake and ice cream Rosemary cranked up the blow torch and the couples browned the meringue "as evenly as possible" according to the directions. I was worried ours would look like a giant roasted marshmallow--you know--burned on one side and raw on the other. But, Steve was careful and meticulous so it was darn near perfect.

THIS IS NOT OUR BAKED ALASKA ours just looked a lot like this.

Imagine pistachio ice cream instead of chocolate.

About 8:30 or so we all took our places at the lovely festive dinner tables set up by the very talented assistants and dug in.

What a wonderful Valentine's Day Dinner.

If you have an opportunity to take a cooking class in your town, or if you live in the Atlanta area and want to sign up at Cooks Warehouse, I highly encourage you to do so. It's different and lots of fun and nobody expects you to know a thing.

I'm Getting Spring Fever---Virginia-Highland garden

Back in the last century when Steve and I started attending the Gardens for Connoisseurs Tour (yippee!! I finally learned to spell it without spell checker!!) this is one of the first-- if not THE first--garden we visited.

I was totally smitten--head over heels in love--and knocked for a loop.
Since then I've seen this garden published a number of times. Truth be told I almost cyber stalk it.

I can honestly say this garden is what got my attention and attracted me to living in town;
especially living in Virginia Highland and Morningside.

The houses were small enough to manage and there were such incredible gardens.
This is the home of David Ellis, owner of landscape design company, Ellis Designs.

You just don't do this in the suburbs. For one thing this is the sidewalk in front of the house and most neighborhoods in the 'burbs don't have sidewalks and for another thing, the neighbors might think you were loony if you landscaped like this.

You have to really study this picture to "see" it.

Nearly every inch of Ellis' property is planted with vignettes of succulents to trees to colorful perennials, like these roses and clematis. Ellis said his backyard garden was designed around this seating area. When he first moved into the house, he placed three lawn chairs in this spot because of the way the afternoon sun lit the area. "This became the center of everything I wanted to do," he explained. From there, he created privacy by planting trees and shrubs along the border of his property. My "New" Furniture--One Woman's Junk...

You know it's true: "One woman's junk is another woman's treasure."

I accumulate a lot of treasures.

And I have a husband who is an enabler.

This little beauty was hanging out by the curb over in Druid Hills.

My darling hubby threw on the brakes and backed up.

"What do ya think?"

"Should we pick it up?"

She stayed in the basement stinking to high heaven for a number of months

before being lovingly cleaned and shipped off to the upholsterers.

(I know my limits--I do crappy upholstery.)

We just got her back and love her. Don't exactly know where she'll end up, but what the heck.

Totally Retro Ford Thunderbird Dresser

Back in the early 1960s my mother bought this dresser. It was part of a "blonde" bedroom suite. It spent some time at my grandmother's house in the front bedroom before being passed on to me. At some point it had been painted white so was passable in our guest room. We stored junk in it plus coloring books and old books from the kid's piano lessons.

I decided to jazz it up a little.

Those of us born in the middle of the last century might remember headboards of the time.

You know the ones that had that handy dandy book shelf built in to the headboard.

You know that bookshelf that your banged your head on each and every night after switching out the light;

the one that you would pile books and other flotsam on top of that would occasionally come tumbling down after you banged your head on the shelf after switching out the light.

Believe me folks, it just isn't worth the extra storage.

My apologies to the nice people at Better Homes and Gardens--but this built in bed just doesn't work for me.

Finally, we have Plantation Shutters in our bathrooms.
They were ordered back before Christmas, during a real crunch, but they're here!!

I'm so excited to replace that white sheet over the tub...

But I think we might need a little color in the master.

January Update--awnings over the back doors

Hello Everybody,

I'm back from my extended Holiday Hiatus.

The Real Estate business is picking up here at the beginning of the year so I've been a little distracted from blogland.

I do want to fill you in on a few VERY BIG things that are going on around here:

We're working on the outside of our house. We had roofs built over the back doors--now I'll be under cover from the rain when I'm digging around in my purse for the door key. In this picture they haven't been stained or the house painted--it still hasn't been--please bear with us.

We don't exactly know what to call these things--are they roofs or awnings or something else entirely?

The carpenters reused some of the tin roof from the sorry excuse of a garage we have.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Next, the garage will be TORN DOWN!! Are those strains of the Hallelujah Chorus I hear?

And a new carport will be built in its place.

This is going to be the mother of all carports (well not really but to me it is).

It's going to have a basement for storing the yard tools and lawn mower. Yippee!!!

And we're getting a terrace with a stone sitting wall around it. Remember this dream terrace from the garden tour?

It's our inspiration.

We're using granite instead of flagstone,

and plain ole ce-ment. (You do know how that's pronounced?) for the flat area with a tasteful granite border.

AND a new DRIVEWAY!!!

Now, I realize that most people don't get very excited about a new driveway. But I know plenty of folks who do. Those of us who have really crumbly, cracked ancient relics that drain water into our basements get real excited about new driveways. I would show you a picture of our driveway now, but I'm too embarrassed.

So ladies and gents, stay tuned for some serious outdoor improvements.

When all through this dollhouse Joan's dad made for Joan and her sister which Joan lovingly restored...

Not a creature was stirring...in the downstairs bathroom adorned to the rafters with Christmas Cheer.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds...which adjoins this festive loo with it's painted vanity.

When out on the lawn...surrounded by this lovely white picket fence with garland, bows and hurricane lamps...

The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow gave the luster of midday to objects below...

When what to my wondering eyes should appear...more than I can possibly take in in one visit!

I new in a moment he must be St. Nick!

His clothes were all covered with ashes and soot...not in this house.

I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight...

Laundry Room Reveal

Yippee!!

I got that laundry room RE-DO. Remember the one I was lusting after (click to see). It's taken a little while, but here it is.

Ta Da!

It took several ~~days~~ weeks of painting and drying. We got down to pretty interesting underware what with not having a washer and dryer hooked up, but the sacrifice was worth it.
I painted the walls Sherwin-Williams "Rainwashed" and the washer/dryer stand Martha Stewart's "Zinc" from Home Depot.

The cabinet is a little Ikea Hack. Steve took one of our office cabinets apart, cut the pieces down on the table saw then put it back together. This is part of a set of cabinets we've used in our office in three houses--so, yes, Ikea cabinets are sturdy and I love them.

This little gem is the Akrum base cabinet with two Adel doors --painted now--and Ikea's pulls and square legs. The counter top is made of plywood with formica veneer from Lowe's or Home Depot (I forgot since it was done years ago.)

Can you believe all this junk went in that cabinet? I'm still working on an ironing board hanger to put behind the door. You know that last 5% takes the longest.

I'm particularly happy with the art work. I originally planned to have a poster sized print made at CVS to frame for the big blank wall, but the cost and hassle factor were major issues.
So I searched around and came up with this:

The digital picture came from iStock Photo. You can pick from zillions of pictures--I wanted laundry on the line--but not cutesy--an old building in Havana with somebody's wash was just the thing. Canvas Discount was cheap--later I read the reviews--not so good. Well anyway I think my print was really fine. Getting the canvas in a skinny box and realizing I had to stretch it myself wasn't exactly what I had in mind--I've never done that before.

But you know me--not easily thwarted.

And I know my way around a staple gun.

Breaking Down a Great Kitchen

Now here's a kitchen that really speaks to me. I like it so much I thought I'd share IT and some of the reasons I love it.

Vintage style and white(Christopher Peacock inspired)
Inset doors on the cabinets
Ceiling is covered in tongue and groove paneling painted semi gloss
Light fixtures don't all match, but they go together and there are several of them for plenty of light (I can't cook in the dark)
Upper cabinets have glass door fronts that make the space feel bigger. I think I like this better than open shelves (less dust).

Natural Roman shades (bamboo?) break up the all white-ness.

Undermount white porcelain apron sink (A word here--my deep undermount sink gives me a back ache when I wash pots and pans, the bending over and reaching down is not good but I love the look)

I think one thing I love about this kitchen style is it's timelessness. Scullery kitchens like this have been around a very long time. We see butler's pantries in this style all the time in vintage bungalows.

Laundry Room Lust

It's Sunday and I have Laundry Room Lust.

What a terrible affliction for a Sunday.

Sometimes I come upon things in the most convoluted way. As I was checking out a new follower--yes ladies and gents, I like to know who's out there reading my ramblings--I took a peek at her blog list and found {show & tell}and there was this tab called "favorite projects" that I had to check out.

Does blogland cause ADD or does it just feed the monster?

Anyway, this laundry room is just marvelous. I guess I mean the washer/dryer stand is marvelous.

The laundry room is pretty ordinary. This one does have a great sink with storage.

But over all it isn't palatial--it doesn't have a bank of windows, or a door to the garden.

It's a normal laundry room in a real person's house.

It's just organized and pretty.

And it has an awesome washer/dryer pedestal with storage.

To my utter delight--There are plans for building the washer/dryer pedestals!!!

I showed this to Steve and he didn't go into shock or growl or make any negative gestures.

This could happen!!

Pretty Old Marietta Cottage

Today I came across this great 100 year old Folk Victorian cottage in Marietta, Georgia. (There are lots of old houses in Marietta) that is featured on Better Homes and Gardens online.

I think this house might have had some Victorian bric-a-brac across the front at the top of the columns. It's a dead ringer for the style according to A Field Guide to American Houses--in case you aren't familiar with the book, it's a wonderful resource for Pretty Old Houses.

It has a center hall with really high ceilings. I'm not sure what's going on with the attic ladder, do you think it's down all the time?

Don't the old floors look wonderful?

I love the young fresh decorating.

Note the burlap drapes. Maybe Ballard?

This is my favorite pict from the article. The old looking glass cabinets are incredible. According to the article they were just made to look old.

The sink was reused from the old kitchen.

I'd never think to arrange hooks like this. It's good.

This might be a little too primitive for me.

It seems all the fireplaces are old brick. Were there mantles?

What can I say about this? Okay, you know me, I can always think of something to say.

They need to paint the ceiling--Haunt Blue of course.

New Old Crystal Chandelier in the Bathroom

Well, I bought that Craigslist Crystal Chandelier.

And I got so excited when I learned it was really old that I paid what the gal was asking. I'm so ashamed (not really since I thought it was a pretty good price for what I was getting)

Here's the ad from Craigslist.

BEFORE

After driving around a little longer than I should have looking for the house I got there and was lead upstairs to the bedroom. The lady flipped the switch and viola -- the thing worked (this was a very positive sign in my book).

The only problem was, the darn thing was still hanging from the ceiling. So, she proceeded to get her handy dandy step ladder and screw driver and started taking it down.

In the meantime I grew a little concerned since it's a pretty heavy chandelier so I hopped up on the ottoman and held it up while she took it down. Now, I'm not in bad shape but holding this thing over my head got old fast. It came down with no problem and I carried it out to the car and put it in the trunk.

That's when I noticed one light hanging at an odd angle. When I put it in the trunk,and arranged the padding around it I must have bumped one of the arms and cracked it.

I almost cried.

Well, what could I do?

I wasn't about to leave it so I got in the car and brought it home thinking the whole way about what kind of glue to use to put it back together. Worse case I figured I could take it to a repair place and have them re-attach it.

AFTER

Turns out, I didn't really break it. It had been "repaired" before. This was an old break and the glue had just come loose. I was relieved that I didn't break it, but a little pissed that the gal didn't admit it was already broken. Hmmm.

The thing was just absolutely filthy. I took it apart and washed each piece in ammonia water.

It just sparkled! I was so excited.

A little dab of silicone held the broken arm and we were back in business.
The main wire was a bit scary so that was replaced along with a few other rusty pieces.

Some of the old wire that holds the crystals was beyond salvation. So, that meant a trip to Home Depot for a whole huge roll of wire.

Let me know if any of you need wire- I've got a life time supply.

The chandy stayed on the kitchen island over the weekend with it's guts hanging out in front of everybody until I finally finished putting it back together. NOTE TO SELF--take pictures before you take something apart.

Now it's at home hanging in my bathroom.

Please ignore the sheet over the window. I haven't decided for sure what to do here--I'm leaning toward plantation shutters.

I love it!! It's just the right size and it really shines.
(I'm leaving the tape on the broken arm a nice long time, just in case.)

Looking through Traditional Home online I came across this garden and thought it would be the perfect thing for a small in-town lot. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's on a small in-town lot and I think it's in Washington state. (A little cyber sleuthing goes a long way)

First is the VANISHING THRESHOLD.

Last the sunken seating area with GRAVEL flooring.

Sarah's Tex-Mex Chicken Soup

Thursday is tennis day here in Atlanta.
A thousand of women hit the courts at 9:30 am and play their hearts out.
Along with the sometimes friendly competition is always great company and pretty darn good food.
I thought I'd share a recipe from one of the gals on my team. As you can tell from the photo, this wasn't staged--it was right off the cuff (pun intended).

Sarah's Tex-Mex Chicken Soup

"Here's the soup I made yesterday. Hope it's not too hard to make! Just make it in a very large pot or very large crockpot then serve it to a big group of people."
Tex-Mex Chicken Soup
3 cans (15oz) corn, undrained
3 cans pinto beans, undrained
3 cans black beans, undrained
1 can chicken stock
1 (28-32oz) can crushed tomato
1 can Rotel with Chilies
2 envelopes Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing
2 envelopes taco seasoning
6 chicken breasts or 1 rotisserie chicken
1 onion, chopped (optional)
Open all cans and pour into pot. Add dry ingredients and onion. Add chicken. Serve with sour cream, salsa, shredded cheese and tortilla chips.

This is my kind of recipe--cans and envelopes and a crockpot. Enjoy!

Bathroom Chandeliers

Wow! How's that for a sexy post title?
Hey, I tell it like it is and that's what's on my mind.
This is the chandelier I bought about two years ago for the master bathroom.

If you follow this humble record of our adventures in renovation you'll remember last weekend Steve installed the vanity lights in the master bath(read about that here) and we decided to put the chandelier intended for the master bath in the bedroom.

So now we have the quandary of what to put in the bathroom.

Here are some ideas.

Master Bathroom Update

I've been kinda quite on the remodeling news lately, but that doesn't mean things have been at a standstill.

Finally we're working on the upstairs including the master bathroom.

It's not ready for the big reveal, but how about a work in progress update?

This weekend Steve has been hanging mirrors and installing the sconces above the vanities.

Here's a little advice:

When you remodel--take pictures of everything. Even small insignificant things...

Things you think might not be all that important could turn out to be VERY important.

Take this pict for instance. It's just framing and a huge opening for the window over the tub.

Wrong--it's a record of where those darn electricians hid the wires for the vanity lights.

After increasing the size about 10 times the original, we could just make out the wires on the right side snaking around inside the framed wall.

I knew they were in there somewhere.

Whew!!!

It only took about half an hour with a clothes hanger bent into a hook to find them and fish them out.

Of course all the pictures in the world won't prevent this:

Every single solitary sconce is going to have to be hung in front of a pipe or a stud. Thankfully they have an ~~app~~ thingy for that.

Here's my project for the day: caulking and painting the window sill. This momma had to be "modified" because the toilet tank bumped into it. Short explanation; the toilet wouldn't fit so the carpenter had to take the sill out and cut it down then re-install it. Cha-Ching!

Oh the pleasures of remodeling.

But we're almost there. Just another week or two.

Right now, I'm up to my ears in finishing the one we have, but Holly has taken on a new project.

I think I'll just live vicariously through her for a while.

This is one Pretty Old House!

We Did it Again!

That's right we bought another dump! I'm pretty excited about it too.

It's another 1920's bungalow, with great bungalow features. Like the front porch - it's granite with neat trim details around the ceiling.

And the front door with beveled glass.

And the shelving that flanks the brick fireplace.

Some of the house isn't too bad as it is.

The original windows are mostly intact and the brass dining room chandelier is going to be great with a couple coats of spray paint (I'm considering something bright and bold - like green - I may be too chicken though).

The butler's pantry is also in pretty good shape, with the original glass and hardware.

Imagine the hardware stripped and the back painted a robin's egg blue, with silver and white dishes in front. It makes me giddy to just think about it.

It's a good thing too, because that giddiness distracts me from this kitchen.

There are few redeeming qualities about this space - it will be gutted.

Oh, the back door is neat though.

I think it may become the bathroom door - with a frosted glass window. I really want French doors back here to look into the yard:

It has 3 pretty standard bedrooms and this one bathroom:

... which has some salvageable pieces: the built-in medicine cabinet and the cast-iron bathtub are in great shape. And the floor tile has a neat pattern. It does still need a sink, toilet and wall tile though.

So that's pretty much it. I'm so excited to chronicle this project as we go so stay tuned...

Bathrooms--Before and After

I love a good "Before and After" and these bathrooms from Better Homes and Gardens are super.
Lately I've been showing 1960s Brick Ranches to a client and we've seen some of these bathrooms and they hurt our eyes--it's nice to see the possibilities.
Now, one disclaimer--BHG claims these are "weekend" projects. Two days? That might be a little ambitious for me.

Done-in-a-Weekend Bathroom Refreshes
The smallest room in the house shouldn't fall short on style. Take your bathroom from outdated to up-to-date in just two days with these makeover ideas.

Before: Overtiled Bathroom
The hundreds of nondescript tiles on the floor and halfway up the walls in this bath were a drawback until their sandy color inspired a fresh, beachy scheme. A few simple updates and well-chosen accessories will transform this bathroom in just two days.

(nice use of the coat rack when there's no place to put a towel bar)

After: Beachy Bathroom Oasis
The first step in the bathroom's transformation was painting the walls a watery blue. Next, serenefabric choices, such as the cream-color cotton window shade and striped shower curtains, tie together the colors of the tiles and walls. A wooden coatrack adds storage by providing a handy spot to hang towels and robes. These elements work together to highlight the original claw-foot bathtub.

Before: Dark and Dated Vanity
The oak vanity provides lots of storage opportunities, but the wood darkens thebathroom. Old Hollywood-style strip light fixtures, a tile countertop, and a flat mirror date the bathroom.

After: Bright White Vanity
Updated to coordinate with the tub and toilet, the old oak vanity now looks more like a sophisticateddresser thanks to a few coats of white paint. A new countertop, sink, faucet, and hardware add to the makeover. Above the vanity are a pair of brushed nickel sconces and a medicine cabinet. On the wall, beach scenes bring together all the colors in the bathroom.

After: Vanity with Flair
The oak vanity was given a new look with white paint, new hardware, bun feet, and decorativecabinet doors. The original center doors were replaced with a set made from mesh cane webbing -- the kind typically used for chair seats -- inserted into premade door frames and backed byplywood. Simply adding two knobs to the previously bare center cabinet panel reinforces thefurniture look.

After: Modern Fixtures
There can never be too much storage in abathroom. A 4-inch-deep medicine cabinet replaced the flat mirror. With a brushed nickel frame and mirrored inside, the medicine cabinet adds a touch of glamour as well as storage to the bathroom. A sleek and simple high-arc faucet with lever handles adds a modern touch.

After: Versatile Accents

A wooden stool with a woven top serves many functions in this bathroom. It adds texture and plays off the room's beach-theme. It also offers a spot to place towels for easy access from thebathtub and a place to sit. In a small space, it's important to choose versatile pieces.

Before: Vintage Style

The homeowners wanted to give this 1929bathroom a modern update without losing its vintage charm. New vintage-inspired fixtures, lighter walls, and bright accents will give this bathroom the quick update it needs.

After: Pink and Green Style
The pedestal sink, floor and wall tile, and bathtub were all keepers in this 1929 bathroom. The homeowners incorporated modern function with a wall-mount shower and a new faucet reminiscent of the original with cross-handle fixtures. New tile installed behind the faucet nearly matches the old pieces, and pink-and-white wallpaper complements the tones of the existing mosaic floor. Changing the window blinds to shutters and replacing an old light fixture and wall mirror with a new pair in satin nickel add impact with minimal effort. A petite green Windsor chair and a colorful bath mat and towels complete the look.

After: Pattern Control
Floor-to-ceiling toile might have been too much in this compact space, but covering just half the walls provides a pleasing counterpoint to the white tile wainscoting. There are no worries about swelling and peeling wallpaper in a bathroom that doesn't get steamy from showers.

Before: Green
Dated green tile and a mini print wallpaper make this 7x7 1/2-foot bathroom feel closed in. A boxy vanity and wall-mount cabinet above the toilet don't help the cramped space. Updated walls and streamlined fixtures will give this bathroom a modern update.

After: Charming Country Bathroom
This bathroom gets a fresh farmhouse look from, a new pedestal sink, open storage shelves, sunny yellow accents, and solid-surfacing panels that resemble beaded-board wainscoting. The new pedestal sink with a wide rim opens up floor space, while a vintage-style recessed medicine cabinet provides storage.

After: Clever Fabric Uses

Multiple shower curtains hung on a curved rod protect the wall and window behind the bathtub and shower area. White subway tile picks up in the shower stall where the beaded board look-alike ends. Repurposed fabric softens the space. The shower curtains are actually window panels outfitted with grommets. The cafe curtains were fashioned using tea towels, a curtain rod, and clip rings. With no room for a traditional towel bar, a double hook with glass finials stands in next to the shower.

After: Colorful HuesA home center chandelier, originally in an aged silver finish, received several coats of yellow paint. Sky blue paint covers the ceiling, an unexpected touch, and complements the bath's sunny accents.

(Raise your hand if you know what these "pots" were really used for.)

After: Savvy StorageMetal pots and bowls hold toiletries. These cleverstorage solutions add country charm to thebathroom.

So, what do you think of the "before and afters?"

Sunday Open House-- Lanier Boulevard Bungalow

Today I stopped by an Open House in the neighborhood.
This is a 3 bedroom bungalow with 2 and a half baths over on Lanier; an easy walk to Elon's and the Family Dog.

According to the listing the house was built in 1925.

The style is 1920s all the way with modern additions.

Upon very close inspection we determined that the front porch originally stretched all the way across the front. The old porch column pillars are visible behind the bushes. I told you it was close inspection.

This house has been in the same family forever. It was renovated by an heir back in the early '90s--that's 1990's.

Let's take the tour:

The front door opens into the living room--thankfully the door is offset...

with the fireplace over to the side. There are five--count 'em five windows in the living room--and they're original with wavy glass--8 panes over one. Such classic styling.

To the right is an addition--they built in half the front porch back in the 1940s or '50s making an office or den. The knotty pine paneling and pine bookcases are almost cool. I prefer my knotty pine painted, but lots of folks like it as it is.

Next is the dining room--very classic. A word about the oriental rug;

this one is awesome--its naturally worn. Patina, baby, patina.

I wouldn't be surprised to find it was original to this house.

There's a center hall with a new modern staircase that leads to two bedrooms and a bath upstairs.

The doors along the hall open into the laundry closet with stacked washer and dryer, storage closets, the basement stairs and a powder room.

Originally the stairs were narrow and twisted their way up. In the renovation they were relocated and extended--much better, believe me.

A new galley kitchen was added with modern styled cabinets and Silestone, I believe. For a galley kitchen, this one isn't bad; there's plenty of counter space and tons of cabinets. It feels roomy. The light fixtures are a little dated and I'd rather have a white kitchen, but again--to each his own.

The dishwasher has to be 20 years old, but it's a Kitchenaid so it'll probably never die.

This family room is part of the addition.
Again, the lighting is not my cup of tea, but it's a really nice space right off the kitchen.

Now for the reason I wanted to see this house:

it has a vanishing threshold.

In layman's terms you walk out onto a patio.

I gotta have that.

The master bedroom was added, too, and you walk right out through the vanishing threshold.

And the master bath. It's very 1990s but the space is great.

The addition was designed by an architect who just happens to be the owner.
You can always tell an architect designed addition--it just looks better.

Now, if I were to buy this house there is one big huge thing I'd do...

that's build a pool right here.

The rest of the house would be a piece of cake to redecorate, but it takes a special lot to have this:

Books in Bookcases--Fancy That!

This month I've been neck deep in finishing our upstairs-- ~~both of~~ those of you who have read my blog for a while know we've been remodeling this house for going on two years. In fact, we bought it in November of 2009 and started knocking out walls in winter of 2010--it's now September 2011.

We're finally finishing the master bedroom suite and the two upstairs bedrooms and bath. I'll be so happy to move upstairs and have my own sink--not that I mind sharing, but sharing a pedestal sink is a little too much togetherness for me.

In the course of finishing things I've had to finish unpacking--it's way too easy to just leave things we don't use in boxes. I've gotten used to less stuff so I wonder why I'm unpacking--but I am.

The other day I unpacked two boxes of books--it was kinda fun finding books I haven't seen in a couple of years; the Bill Bryson books, some old decorating books, a set of books from Steve's parents. I carted them all down to the living room and stowed them away in the bookcases--in a real mess until I get in the mood to "do the book shelves".

So until that spark of inspiration hits, I've been noticing bookcases.
I think I might have stumbled upon another trend.

I think, especially in bungalows and cottages where space is limited and rooms have to do double duty, a table in the kitchen makes total sense. Plus to eat, I'd much rather sit at a real table and on a real chair than perch on a stool at an island. However--here's the disclaimer--tables don't provide the storage space of an island. There's always that pesky give and take.

When Kirstie Alley does a cottage she goes all out.

Her cottage is for sale for a mere $2,350,000. Really, that doesn't sound too bad for 16 acres on the water.

The listing from Sotheby's says:

Beautiful Cottage nestled ona private 16 acres with gorgeous oceanfront on pretty Islesboro Island.Take the ferry in Lincolnville for a short 20 minute ride across the Bay, youwill find yourself breathing differently. It's a cottage with 3,140 square feet--not big at all.

Do you have cottage overload yet?

This is the only dining room pictured. Does it seem too small for a house that has 10 parking spaces?

Charming Brick Cottage

The listing says "You should run to see this one."
Guess they weren't kidding.
This Charming Brick Cottage is under contract after only 6 weeks (that's darn good).

I've walked by this house several times and always paused to admire it.

It has a BIG addition on the back that is not exactly the best I've ever seen, but adding an addition this way is much easier on the budget than "bumping up" or "popping the top."
I do appreciate that they copied some of the original features. Notice how the old overhangs were enclosed with slats. This acted as a venting system for the attic--I don't know if it still does, but the look is totally vintage. They copied that on the new addition.

Another detail that was replicated is the windows. Notice one large pane at the bottom and 4 vertical panes on top. Good work there. Peek at the side door--very craftsman.

Here's the part I could never see from the street no matter how hard I tried to peek in the windows.

Is this cute or what??

They get an A+ on paint color selection.

It looks like they kept the old built in and probably the chandy is old.

Pop, Pop, Pop!

This family room is in the addition. It's a great space.

The kitchen might be one place they could have worked on a bit more, but this house was priced accordingly and it sold, so there you go. I think a counter depth fridge would do wonders for the space. And I could skip the pot rack.

There are two bedrooms and this bath on the main level.
Outstanding paint selection continues.

The master bedroom is upstairs in the addition. Love those hardwood floors--shoot, it's all nice.

Two words for this room: chandelier-- art .

Now more good stuff...

Before and After "Bump-Ups"

We all enjoy a good "before and after."
Maybe it's like a lady I met once said, "I love to make old houses pretty."
Here are a few ugly duckling houses that became swans. (photos courtesy of the Atlanta Journal Constitution)

All these homes had second story additions that added much needed living space--bedrooms, baths and closets. Space was added without turning them into McMansions.

This first house, in Morningside, is a good example of Painted Brick with Dark Trim. I blogged a few other homes with this paint scheme a while ago. See that post here.

AFTER

Like I said before, "There is no special place in hell for people who paint brick."
The AJC article said the owners painted this home to make the addition blend with the original. Lots of people do that. Sometimes its almost impossible to make the new brick match the old.

A few things I like about this renovation:

added trim to gables with Tudor "turkey track" detailing
arched roof on the portico over the front door
shutters make the facade look finished
they didn't paint the granite foundation

BEFORE

The next home got a HUGE facelift that includes a higher roofline, front dormer and gable- plus a front porch.
They raised the first floor ceiling height, too. I'll bet that makes it seem a lot roomier.
AFTER

BEFORE

Most of us wouldn't have looked twice at this house. It was sooo plain, tiny and downright ugly. It's located in Loring Heights; a neighborhood built in the 1940s I believe.

BEFORE

AFTER, its quite a handsome fellow. It's hard to believe it's the same house. They even added a swing on the porch. Wonder if they painted the ceiling "haint blue."

Next is my fav. Don't you just love it? I wish we had interior pictures--sigh.
This home is in Morningside, too, probably built in the 1930s.

AFTER

Why I like it:

the color--ummm, ummm, ummm
arched front door with gorgeous X window trim
shed dormer with 4 windows is in proportion
screened porch on the front retains its curved roof line
(this is just a good picture from a good angle--we know how important that is)

BEFORE-it was big from the beginning and got bigger but not big and tacky

BACKSIDE BEFORE--the walkout terrace was great even then

My thoughts:

I'm not crazy about the angle of this picture.
The roof is probably flatter than I'd like, but the second story blends nicely.
The short roof between the first and second floors is really important. It breaks up the flatness.
That copper roof and those gutters are quite nice (cha ching!)
The short roof over the French door is good good
The detail and window box at the middle window add interest, again breaking up the flatness
They didn't paint the granite foundation

Curb Appeal Ideas--Before and After

Yesterday I blogged a house we redid in Garden Hills--it's fun to go back and remember how satisfying it is to turn an ugly duckling into a better looking duckling (I'm not so vain as to think it became a swan).

Today, I finally opened a bit of junk email from Better Homes and Gardens and found these great "before and afters."

First, the Plain Jane Cape Cod--is a very common style that could have been built from around the 1940s up till last week.

BEFORE

A small front porch gable was added to cover the front door and a pergola was placed over the porch.
A new improved front door with sidelights was installed, the front window was enlarged and new garage doors were stained to match the house.
I think this face lift would be affordable and not too overwhelming.

AFTER

The next example:
Oh the yellow 1920's cottage--or it could be 1930's or 1940's here in Morningside.
This one lacks something that really bothers me--there are no overhangs. It's flat. The gutters sit flat against the house. Flat, flat, flat. Maybe it's a Southern Thing but I think houses should have at least a little eave around them. Really, I like houses with nice deep eaves, but that's not appropriate on all styles.

BEFORE

Ahhh...Much better. Don't you think the extended eaves really make the difference? Of course the wonderful sage green paint and new landscaping are huge, but the addition of eaves does it for me. (I love this one!)

AFTER

And last:
The oh too common North Fulton European Stucco (make that EIFS or synthetic stucco). This style is the bane of Realtors in the suburbs. These houses if not maintained can rot from the inside. On this particular house the stucco had broken down and started to leak which lead to a mold infestation--the cure--rip off the synthetic stucco.

BEFORE

New wood shingle siding, new windows, a portico over the front door, updated garage doors and additional trim brought this baby into the new millennium.
Now that's inspiring and gives my friends who think they're "stuck in their stucco" some hope.

AFTER

I hope this abbreviated tour has given you a few good ideas--it just fed my appetite for fixing and flipping.

It seems we all love Craigslist. Some of you out there in Blogland find treasures on Craigslist all the time.
With it so popular--I thought I'd post a few things I want to clear out--you know those pieces that went better in the other house, or ones I'm just ready to pass on to the next guy or gal.

So here's what I've got:

Two Handmade oriental rugs
8X10 (approximately--you know oriental rugs are never exactly standard)
100% wool. I bought these rugs from a good company here in Atlanta about 15 years ago. I wanted only one rug for the dining room, but brought both home to "try them out" and wound up keeping them. They were so nice, I couldn't decide.

Dog not included.

This rug is $250. It has one spot of damage near a corner.

Here you can see the fringe is part of the rug (warp and welf). It isn't sewn on like on a machine made rug.

This rug is also 8X10, handmade and 100% wool.

It's in excellent condition the price on it is $450.

I'll sell both for $600.

Queen upholstered headboard $50.
The fabric is Ralph Lauren--I don't remember the name. We recovered this baby a few years back--it started out with Laura Ashley cabbage roses (my pink and blue period). I'll throw in the bed frame.
What a steal!

There's one rip in the corner--moving twice in one year was hard on my stuff.

Seaside Porch Inspiration

Recently I spent the morning on a self-guided walking tour of Seaside--what I mean is, I just wandered around and looked at the pretty houses.

And I happened upon the perfect porch.

It's a modern interpretation of a Southern Classic. It's wonderful on this new bungalow.

What do you think of the porch railing design?

Sorry for the poor quality of this shot, but again I'm looking at the details:
Five--yes 5 French doors open on to this beauty.
Three square windows over the doors let in lots of natural light.
Double support columns with a single column above extent to the roof.
A ceiling fan on each end
The house is the color of grayed shingled seaside cottages.
The table and chairs are weathered teak and the swing might be as well. They're very hard to see.

Wouldn't it be heaven if this gem extended off the back of an old bungalow with a pool located about where the picket fence is here?

And leave it to Martha to show us how to decorate it with style.

On Sutton Place: Open House Party

Ikat Copy Cat

This has happened to me before.

Back in the last century, I made some drapes from this wonderful fabric. It was a perfect magnolia print with all the right colors and looked just marvelous in my living room. That was during my red and green phase--not to be confused with my previous pink phase--but I digress.

This time I was putzing around in Forsyth Fabrics over on the Westside and happened upon the most perfectly amazing ikat that had all the right colors. You know the ones: beachy blue/green and sandy goldish browny beige. All on a just-the-thing linen. Of course it was expensive for me, so I followed the advice of the pros and bought enough for accent pillows.

I got home and spread it out over the sofa--it matched my drapes, and gave the bit of color and balance the family room needed.

I LUUUUVED IT.

For the record: that was in April.
It is now August,

and I received the Ballard catalog and guess what?

Okay, so the colors are different...

There it is: second row from the top third sample over. NEW! Toscana Ikat Slate.

Then today I got the online Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams catalog and guess what?

Thank goodness the colors are different, but...

At first I was flattered that I had such good taste. HA!
But now I don't know. The more I see it...I just don't want it to be too common.

The last time this happened with my perfect magnolia print I was thoroughly disgusted.
I started seeing MY FABRIC everywhere. Finally, when I saw it at Pier One on the deeply discounted outdoor pillows I went home are started planning to redecorate.

I'm not ready to RE-decorate--I haven't even finished decorating yet.

At least this time around, I'm not in so deep.

Signs of the Times

Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign.

The signs I'm talking about are nostalgic or witty and don't break your mind.
Lately I'm seeing lots of crafty signs in blogland.
Maybe it's just a decorating fad, but signs can convey our thoughts and opinions, remind us of our favorite places and sometimes just make us smile.

Here are a few I've come across:

Subway sign are all the rage. I think these are really good examples with a nice table to boot.

This one from Seaside, Florida. I definitely agree.

I like the way the artist used old wood from this Pinterest board.

At first I thought this was going to be serious, but it's in Key West.

This little beauty was nabbed over at Not so Shabby. I love it!

Open House Sunday--Virginia Highland Bungalow

I'm copying Nita over at Mod Vintage Life and doing this Open House Sunday. You have GOT to check out her post this week. (I mean it--click HERE NOW. But please come back.)

Remember, imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

This house is a nice little bungalow over in Virginia Highland.

It has a nice porch, though it doesn't extend all the way across the front. The light fixtures are updated.

The fireplace is very craftsman with high windows and built-ins. On one side is a book case, on the other is a bench.

The window seems to be original--see the locking mechanism with the chain?

The dining room has this wonderful craftsman window placement. I think this arrangement with the high window flanked by two regular sized ones was to accommodate a buffet or china cabinet. Notice the French doors to the living room. Most of the time those are missing.

This Butler's Pantry is a gem! Someone painstakingly restored it. The drawers work, the doors open and close and the hardware has either been restored or is new. Wouldn't it be great with the bead board painted light blue?

Now for the new part: Isn't this kitchen wonderful!?

There's a breakfast room...

and a family room on the back with lots of windows and a door to the deck.

There's an addition with a master bath. The hall bath has been re-done and a small bath has been added to the front bedroom.
I think the sellers did a great renovation here. What do you think?

How Tall Should a Headboard Be?

I want a new bed.
Period.
There I said it.
We have two queen beds, but for our new master suite, I want a king sized bed.

The scale of the room calls for a king.

So, how tall should the headboard be?
As with all my ponderings, I went online to seek out examples.

This one is pretty nicely scaled, but I don't think I'll be going for the tufted look.

I do like the simple square with some type of trim to define it. Isn't the monogram great?

This collage from Pinterest shows 3 examples, ignore the tufts, unless you like tufts, then you can admire them.
Two out of three of these are low. hmmm.

This one is nice. It appears to have wood trim and maybe nail heads. I like the colors.
Another thing I like about this bed is it's upholstered all around--it's an upholstered bed not just headboard.
That means I won't have to deal with a bed skirt, but I'll lose all that lovely storage under the bed.

Here's one from Kate at Censational Girl. This is from her master bedroom makeover.
I'm seeing a lot of examples of headboards that are just a tiny bit higher than the lampshades.
So how high are the lampshades?

This bedroom is sooo pretty, but I'm leaning toward a square shaped headboard.

Now we're getting there.
Really, this one is tufted, but the tufts are covered up by the pillows. What's the point?
We won't have this many pillows. Maybe some European ones and a couple more for color.

Contemporary classic A neutral palette and traditional design are what make this bedroom a cosy classic, but the addition of a sassy animal-print bench gives the room an edge.

I kinda like this one: it's square, has some nail head trim, the sides and foot board are covered.

It's a little too French for me,but I like the scale.

Okay, I've cleared up a couple of things: I like the bed to be upholstered, not just the head board, and I like the head board to be tall.

But how tall should it be?

Wabi-Sabi and House of Fifty's second edition

This morning I found 2 things that appeal to me.

1. House of Fifty online magazine's second edition. The editor is turning 50 -- that in itself is affirming. She's young and hip and not about to succumb to old and frumpy. My new role model. The magazine features a collection of blog articles from some of the best around. It's the kind of thing I'd read on my iPad, if I had one, while sitting in the swing on my screened porch, if I had one. I don't. So, I'll just cozy up to my little notebook computer on the couch and be perfectly happy--Which brings me to #2.

2. Wabi-Sabi from this House of Fifty blog--click here. In relation to houses and homes the author says:

... wabi-sabi is sometimes described as beauty that is imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. It nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.

This really really speaks to me. Those of you who live in a renovation project like I do will understand.
Shoot, maybe you'll get it even if you don't live in a renovation project.

Billy Reid's Pretty Old Store in Florence, Alabama

Last weekend we visited Florence to see the family and hear some really good music at the W.C. Handy Music Festival. While we were there we made a point of going to Billy Reid on Court Street--the flagship store??? in Florence, Alabama????

I think so.

For those of us into Pretty Old buildings this was a treat.

One cool and unusual thing about the Handy Festival is there's music in some unexpected places like Billy Reid and the Italian Restaurant, Rigatoni's, across the street. They even has someone playing at the icecream parlor.

There's just too much talent in one place, I guess.

Dillon Hodges was playing while we were there. He was really good--kinda bluesy, and folksy.

Dillon was playing under this soooo interesting deer head and plate vignette set against the original brick walls.

We listened and shopped.

The store was just too ~~cool neat groovy~~ not what I grew up with on Court Street. It's built in an old store on the main street with extra high ceilings covered by tin ceiling tiles. The ceiling light fixtures are all different and all vintage--rewired of course. The pair of old lamps in the pict above match.

The shelves were fascinating. Who would put a horse skull in a clothing store? In the southeast?

I love loved loved it!! The whole thing--well maybe not the horse skull so much.

Here are some more chairs used as art. (remember Joan's porch?) This shelf was pretty high and they probably needed something big. (There are professional photos of this store on the website. Much better than mine.)

Speaking of ART. Check out the window;

Fish made of tin cans, scrap metal and odds and ends.

This is my favorite. Note the cheerleading trophy used as a snout.

Also noteworthy was Electrolux.

Before you go, I have to say--Billy Reid's clothing is nice--very nice. For those of you not so familiar with him: visit his website here. By the way, there's a huge back room where they take photos for the website.

Not that I would snoop around and ask nosy questions. I just wish I'd gotten a picture of the dressing rooms.

Good Life Wednesday--Beachy Stuff

Good Life Wednesday is about doing what makes you happy and being thankful for it.

I want to thank Sarah as A Beach Cottage in Australia for validating our choice to hang this very weird thing we found on the beach...

on our family room wall.

I felt pretty good about all the other things we'd found on the beach and carted home:

the bowl of pebbles from Pebble Beach in California--that was before the days of x-ray luggage checks and increased security when you could fill your suitcase will rocks and drag it to the check-in.
the piece of driftwood Steve mounted on a stand.
tons and tons of shells that remind us of sand and saltwater

Much as I love it, that drift-board is a little weird.

But it makes us happy.

Girl's Dinner Party

Old Friends are real treasures.
Once in a while a group of my Old Friends get together for dinner.

I had the pleasure of hosting the Girl's Dinner Party last night.

We drank wine, grilled steaks, ate salad and potatoes a'gratin and yacked till almost midnight.

We finished with ice cream cake and coffee.

I set the table with my late mother-in-law's china that came from Japan during the early 1950s and her silver goblets which were a wedding gift. I also used my late aunt's wine glasses, a new/old linen table cloth and linen napkins I picked up at a estate sale this summer, and my stainless (I don't have silver service for 6, just for 4 but I'm working on it). Almost all of it is very dear like Old Friends.

Life is Good.
