Breaking Down a Great Kitchen

Now here's a kitchen that really speaks to me.  I like it so much I thought I'd share IT and some of the reasons I love it.

  • Vintage style and white(Christopher Peacock inspired)
  • Inset doors on the cabinets
  • Ceiling is covered in tongue and groove paneling painted semi gloss
  • Light fixtures don't all match, but they go together and there are several of them for plenty of light (I can't cook in the dark)
  • Upper cabinets have glass door fronts that make the space feel bigger.  I think I like this better than open shelves (less dust).

  • Three windows over the sink come almost to the countertop
  • Natural Roman shades (bamboo?) break up the all white-ness.
  • Plants
  • Bridge faucet
  • Undermount white porcelain apron sink (A word here--my deep undermount sink gives me a back ache when I wash pots and pans, the bending over and reaching down is not good but I love the look)
  • Contrasting countertops
  • Marble on the island (this is bianco Venatino)
  • Urn and wire basket
  • Contrasting hardware finish
  • Clasps on upper cabinets--vintage look all the way
  • Brackets under the cabinets
  • Beaded board back splash
  • Wide board floors in a dark stain
  • Sub-zero
  • Wine cooler
  • There's a Wolf range not pictured
I think one thing I love about this kitchen style is it's timelessness. Scullery kitchens like this have been around a very long time. We see butler's pantries in this style all the time in vintage bungalows.

What do you think?

Are Farm Tables the New Kitchen Island?

Lately I've seen tables used in the kitchen where I'd expect an island to be.

This is NOT new.

Is this a NEW MODERN trend?
I think so and I like it.

I think, especially in bungalows and cottages where space is limited and rooms have to do double duty, a table in the kitchen makes total sense.  Plus to eat, I'd much rather sit at a real table and on a real chair than perch on a stool at an island. However--here's the disclaimer--tables don't provide the storage space of an island. There's always that pesky give and take.

New Kitchen Cabinets

The new cabinets came on  Friday and Steve installed them over Memorial Day Weekend.
Here's the staging area.  By the time I thought to take pictures, he'd already put in several cabinets.  At first there were a lot more boxes.

In case you're wondering: the red thing on the tripod is a laser level that shoots a level beam of light on the wall.  It's a miracle tool for installing cabinets.
If  you look carefully you can see our stainless apron sink under the window.  I'm so worried about scratches that I covered it with a foam sheet. Hopefully, after a year or so I'll feel better and can uncover it.
This is how it really looks.  It's so cool!
There's a drain rack that goes in the bottom.
The white thing inside is the styrofoam packing material--ignore it.

The upper cabinets went in next then the island.

Steve designed the island to hold the microwave.  It'll go in the big square opening to the left of the plastic.  (Again, I covered the island with plastic to protect it.) We don't know if we'll like having the microwave below the counter, but we do think it'll look better.  I'll have to get back to you on that design choice.
The empty square bottom cabinet thing on the right of this picture is where the "Beverage Cooler" will go.
It's our compromise.  I finally got Steve to dump the old beer fridge by agreeing on a new snazzy beverage center setup.

On the other side of the island, across from the dishwasher is a bank of drawers.  I'm thinking of storing our plates and bowls there.  Ikea has a rack with dowels that hold the dishes in place in a drawer.  We'll see.

Here it is all cleaned up.

The rep from TopSouth is coming today for the "Pre-template" appointment.  The countertops should be in on the 10th.

We close on our temporary house tomorrow and move out the next two days.  We can't move in to this Morningside house for a couple more weeks--minimum.
This is where things get interesting.
