Seaside Porch Inspiration

Recently I spent the morning on a self-guided walking tour of Seaside--what I mean is, I just wandered around and looked at the pretty houses.

And I happened upon the perfect porch.

It's a modern interpretation of a Southern Classic. It's wonderful on this new bungalow.

I took this shot of the ceiling to record the structure. If you're going to copy something you gotta have details.

What do you think of the porch railing design?

Sorry for the poor quality of this shot, but again I'm looking at the details:
Five--yes 5 French doors open on to this beauty.
Three square windows over the doors let in lots of natural light.
Double support columns with a single column above extent to the roof.
A ceiling fan on each end
The house is the color of grayed shingled seaside cottages.
The table and chairs are weathered teak and the swing might be as well. They're very hard to see.

Wouldn't it be heaven if this gem extended off the back of an old bungalow with a pool located about where the picket fence is here?

And leave it to Martha to show us how to decorate it with style.

House Colors: Painted Brick with Dark Trim

Lately on my neighborhood walks, I started noticing light painted houses with dark trim.
It all started with this one.  Remember it from My Sunday Walk?
It has personality.

This one does, too.

 I really like this house.

As you can see, all these house colors are a little different--as they should be--but the color plan is the same: light brick and dark trim.

I got a little carried away and started searching the MLS for examples.
The photography is better than my phone.  What a surprise.

What about this one?
Nice porch--but that's another topic.

 Check out this evening pict.
The landscape lighting is soooo good.

This house must have been hard to photograph--I think its on a hill-- but this front door is wonderful. (except for the brass kick plate).

And the hits just keep on coming. This one has THREE trim colors. Very nice. I've found that it's hard to choose paint colors to go with yellow brick. The owners of this house did a fine job.

This little gem was renovated by a builder. It seems the brick was painted to help the new parts blend in with the old. Sometimes that's a great solution.  There is no special place in hell for people who paint brick.

Here's one that is really much prettier in "person."  I tried to take a pict of it in the evening, mine was no good.

The trim on the next one is a little light for me, but it shows another take on the plan.

I think I've figured out the attraction:
These house remind me of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, or maybe french vanilla and caramel.

Hey, get your paint inspiration from things you like.

You might remember this beauty from the post on terraces--readers loved it.

Remember? No? click here.

I think I need a snack.

Joan's Pretty Old House

Get ready Readers.
This is one really Pretty Old House.
It's so PRETTY it's going to take me several posts to show it all.

This house belongs to a dear friend whom I've known for ages. It's her dream house and you can tell.
Just a word of caution: Joan's style is very rustic and country.
If you're looking for a serene beachy styled Pretty Old House.
This ain't it.
The house is in Ball Ground, Georgia, about an hour north of Atlanta.
Enough already... Let's step up on the porch Banksie's waiting.

We're met by this rustic rocker with the table and Spanish Moss covered birdhouse.

And this wonderful old front door which may or may not be original.
I'm always so overwhelmed I forget to ask.
We're just beginning and I'm already dizzy.

This porch extension is what Joan refers to as "The Porch"  as in "Come on up and let's sit on the porch."
Notice the robin's egg blue ceiling?  Seen that before?

I love the "rug" Joan painted on the floor. Also, the floor color is probably something like "Front Porch Gray." It's very classic.  She wouldn't dream of painting it any other color.

Don't overlook the distressed blue chest.  All the furniture on the porch is so comfy--made for sitting and talking and taking it easy.  The farm table is a little higher than a typical coffee table--just right for snacks and drinks. And the ferns...

This porch wraps around three sides of the house. Sigh....
Here we go.

The side porch has so much style-I just don't know how to describe this.  Joan said she needed something for the walls--they were too plain--so she hung these chairs. And the spinning wheel? And more wicker?

a little secret--- Joan stashes her pillows in this rustic bin.

Turn the corner and---
The back porch holds the white picnic table. For those of you who love all things white this is pretty good.
How about that dinner bell?

This is the bathroom window--from the outside.

And an old wash tub with its stand filled with silver dead nettle.

This is what to do with an old garden cart.
And a shelf for succulents.

This dear reader is the Back Door.  Its nicer than most front doors. Look at the transom above the short roof/cover.

 Details, details, details.

Well, that wraps up the Porch Tour. I want to thank Joan again for allowing me to take pictures of her amazing home and share them with you.

Check back soon for the Garden Tour  and the Tour of the Inside.
